TIP: Don’t self-sabotage. An common way to take the pressure off is by doing things that make a successful outcome even less likely. Common forms of self-sabotage are procrastination and alcohol or drug abuse. Remember, self-doubt is natural, especially for people taking on difficult tasks.
RESEARCH: When we doubt our own capabilities, a common defensive mechanism is to handicap ourselves (Berglas & Jones, 1978). We hide behind our handicap as a way of avoiding doubts about our capabilities (Oleson & Arkin, 1994).
